We've spent years inspecting older homes and buildings, identifying asbestos containing materials, and explaining to Raleigh home and business owners how to remove them safely.

Asbestos is common in older insulation, floor tiles, siding, and textured ceilings. It often goes unnoticed until renovation or damage releases dangerous fibers into the air.

This page explains where asbestos may be hiding, how professional removal works, and what to expect when you call us.

YOU HAVE QUESTIONS,

WE HAVE ANSWERS.

Whether you're buying, selling, renovating, or maintaining an older Raleigh building, asbestos testing and removal are essential for protecting everyone inside.

Asbestos removal means locating, containing, and safely disposing of building materials that contain asbestos fibers, using licensed contractors and controlled procedures so fibers don't become airborne.

Raleigh Asbestos Removal Pros handles this work for homeowners and property managers across the Triangle, and this page walks through what the process actually involves, where asbestos tends to hide, and what state and federal rules require before anyone touches a wall.

Where Asbestos Shows Up in Older Homes

If your house or building went up before 1980, there's a real chance it contains asbestos somewhere. Manufacturers used it for decades because it resists heat and doesn't burn. It shows up in some surprising places.

MaterialCommon LocationTypical Era
Vermiculite insulationAttics1920s to 1990
Vinyl floor tile and masticBasements, kitchens1950s to 1980s
Pipe wrap and boiler insulationBasements, mechanical rooms1930s to 1970s
Popcorn ceiling textureLiving rooms, bedrooms1950s to 1980
Cement siding shinglesExterior walls1940s to 1980s
Joint compoundDrywall seams1930s to 1970s

None of these materials pose a danger just sitting there. Asbestos becomes a health problem when it's disturbed, sanded, cut, or crumbled, and the fibers get released into the air where someone can breathe them in. That's the whole reason a renovation or a simple demolition project can turn into an abatement job overnight.

What North Carolina Requires Before Removal

North Carolina requires asbestos abatement contractors to hold a license through the NC Department of Health and Human Services, Asbestos Hazard Management Branch. This isn't optional paperwork. Unlicensed removal work is illegal, and it's also how people end up with contaminated homes years later.

Federal rules add another layer. Under NESHAP (National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants), certain renovation and demolition projects require written notification to state regulators before work starts, along with an inspection to identify asbestos containing materials.

OSHA also sets a permissible exposure limit of 0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter of air, averaged over an 8 hour shift, for anyone working around the material.

In March 2024, the EPA finalized a rule banning ongoing uses of chrysotile asbestos, the last form still legally used in the United States. That doesn't mean asbestos disappears from existing buildings.

It means new products can't legally contain it going forward, while the older materials already installed in Raleigh homes still need proper testing and removal.

How We Handle a Removal Project

Every job starts with testing, not guessing. We take samples of suspect material and send them to an accredited lab for analysis under polarized light microscopy. Guessing based on age or appearance isn't reliable enough, and it isn't legal for licensed work anyway.

  • Site containment using plastic sheeting and negative air pressure to keep fibers from spreading to the rest of the building
  • Removal by technicians wearing full protective suits and respirators rated for asbestos work
  • Wet methods to keep fibers from becoming airborne during removal
  • Sealed, labeled disposal in accordance with EPA and NC DEQ hazardous waste rules
  • Clearance air testing before we remove containment barriers

We use DuPont Tyvek suits and 3M respirators rated for asbestos fiber protection, the same equipment abatement crews use nationwide.

On the material side, if you're wondering why your 1960s ranch has vermiculite insulation or transite siding, brands like Johns Manville, W.R. Grace, and USG produced a large share of the asbestos containing building products sold in the Southeast during that period.

Knowing the manufacturer sometimes helps us predict what we'll find once testing confirms it.

What This Costs and How Long It Takes

Pricing depends on the material, the square footage, and how accessible the area is. Removing floor tile in a single room is a different job than clearing an entire attic of vermiculite insulation. We inspect first and give you a written estimate before any work begins, so there's no guessing on your end either.

Small jobs, like a section of pipe wrap or a few tiles, often wrap up in a single day. Larger projects, like whole attic insulation removal or siding replacement, can run several days once you factor in containment setup, the removal itself, and clearance testing. We schedule around your timeline and let you know realistic windows once we've seen the site.

When You Actually Need to Call Us

Call before you start a renovation in a home built before 1980, especially if you're planning to sand popcorn ceilings, pull up old flooring, or tear into walls with visible pipe insulation. Don't disturb the material yourself to "check" it.

Testing requires lab analysis, not a visual guess, and disturbing suspect material is exactly how a contained problem becomes an airborne one.

If a home inspection flagged possible asbestos, or you're buying an older property in the Raleigh area and want peace of mind before closing, we can test and give you a clear answer.

Same goes for property managers dealing with tenant turnover in buildings that predate the 1989 partial phase out. Reach out and we'll walk you through what your specific situation needs.
